The development of resource potential and the rational development of subsoil resources, with strict observance of environmental safety standards and the widespread introduction of modern technologies is one of the key priorities of the Company.

In accordance with the Rosneft-2022 Strategy approved by the Company's Board of Directors, the key objectives of the Company's exploration program are defined: ensuring 100% replenishment of liquid hydrocarbon reserves and increasing the success of exploration drilling to 95% by 2022 through the development of technologies and innovative solutions.

The Company has developed and is implementing a set of research and development and experimental works, as well as measures to create its own geophysical service. Field seismic modeling methods were introduced to provide optimal monitoring systems for projects in the Samara region and Sakhalin. Work is in progress for Eastern Siberia.

A unique system of seismic data recording is in development, which has no analogues in the world. In Russia, for the first time in the industry, 3D winter testing of this system was carried out in Western Siberia, at the Ai-Yaunsky line pipe. The surveying was carried out in parallel with production works according to the standard method. Processing of the received data is fully completed. The results surpassed the expectations: geological informativeness and productivity were significantly increased, and the possibility of carrying out work in exclusive areas was proved.

To increase the success of exploration drilling, step-by-step implementation of advanced technologies for processing and interpreting seismic data continued. In particular, innovative approaches to account for inhomogeneities of the upper part of the column are used to minimize the forecast error for structures. At the design stage, finite-difference modeling of the wave field is carried out  to select the optimal parameters of the seismic survey.

By the end of 2018, 142 exploration wells were tested on land in Russia, with a high success rate of 84%. Approximately 5,000 linear kilometers of 2D seismic work and 10,000 square kilometers of 3D seismic work were completed.

As a result of successful exploration, 23 fields  and 230 new deposits were discovered with total reserves of 250 million tons of oil equivalent.

Replenishment of oil and gas condensate production from exploration activities amounted to 146%.

Western Siberia

The reserves addition in Western Siberia amounted to 222.8 million tons of oil and condensate and 107.7 billion cubic meters of gas. 52 exploration wells were completed and tested with a success rate of 87%. 3,600 sq. km of 3D seismic survey was completed. Two new fields and 76 new deposits with total reserves of B1C1 + B2C2 of 193.2 million tons of oil equivalent were discovered.

In 2018, the Irtyshskoye field was discovered at the new Erginskoye oil and gas cluster in West Siberia, which was formed in 2017, based on the results of re-testing of prospecting and appraisal well No.16 of Novoendyrskaya, from which oil inflow with a flow rate of 26.9 m3/day was obtained after hydraulic fracturing, with oil and liquefied gas reserves of 22.5 million tons of oil equivalent (initial recoverable reserves C1+C2).

LLC RN-Uvatneftegas is consistently implementing its strategy for the development of the Uvat project, including the annual growth in the rates of recoverable reserves. As the results of the work carried out in 2018 show, geologists still explore significantly more oil reserves than they extract from the subsoil. Thus, according to the results of LLC RN-Uvatneftegaz operations in 2018, the growth of B1C1 reserves (25.2 mln tons) exceeded the production volume (10.6 mln tons) by 238%.

The main achievement of the exploration program of LLC RN-Uvatnefetegas is the discovery of two new fields in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug at the Yuganskoye-11 line pipe and the Yuganskoye-12 line pipe based on the results of drilling of the first exploration wells.

The Company continues to actively develop its gas business. In 2018, the Company's gas assets underwent geological exploration work in the amount of 280 square kilometers of 3D seismic surveying and 2 wells were tested. The increase in the Company's gas reserves in Western Siberia amounted to 107.7 billion m3 in 2018.

Work continues on the study of the unconventional gas-saturated collector of the Berezovskaya Formation in Western Siberia. In 2018, based on the results of testing of wells in the interval of the Berezovskaya Formation at the Kharamurskoye field, new gas deposits were discovered in the VB1 and NB1 formations. The increment of recoverable gas reserves of B1+B2 category within the Kharampursky line pipe amounted to 79.9 billion m3 of gas.

The Company works at the Russko-Rechenskiy license area located in the Tazovsky district of the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous district, on the border with Krasnoyarsk region. According to the results of exploration work in 2018, a record flow rate of 903 m3/day with dissolved gas was obtained during the testing of the Russko-Rechenskaya well.

In 2018, Rospan International completed the interpretation of the Minkhovsky line pipe 3D seismic survey, confirmed the prospects of the field, and specified the locations of exploration and prospecting wells as part of the continued exploration of the Gydan Peninsula.

Eastern Siberia and the Far East

The total increase in reserves in Eastern Siberia and the Far East amounted to 39.4 million tons of oil and condensate and 34,4 billion cubic meters of gas.

11 exploration wells were completed and tested with a success rate of 73%. 4,800 linear km of 2D seismic survey and 1,700 square kilometers of 3D seismic survey were carried out. Two new deposits with reserves of B1C1+B2C2 of 1.1 million TOE were discovered.

The technological development of the Company in terms of improving the efficiency of geological exploration work concerns not only field seismic surveys, but also methods of their interpretation. As a result of a comprehensive analysis of geological and geophysical materials, a methodology was developed to forecast the areas of development of improved reservoirs in the formations, timed to the protrusions of the foundation and rift structures in the Osinsky formation. Application of modern high-tech approaches to the interpretation of geological and geophysical data (seismic inversion, calculation of seismic attributes, comprehensive analysis of results) and improvement of the geological concept has led to a great success in geological exploration.

Central Russia, Timan-Pechora and the South of Russia

In 2018, the total incremental reserves in the Volga-Ural region, Timan-Pechora and in the south of Russia amounted to 67.9 million tons of oil and condensate and 7.9 billion cubic meters of gas. 79 wells were completed with a success rate of 84%. A significant volume of 3D Common Depth Point Method seismic work was performed: 4,600 square kilometers and 68 linear kilometers of 2D. The Company discovered 21 fields and 152 new deposits with total reserves of B1C1+B2C2 of all discoveries of 55.4 million tons of oil equivalent.

In the south of the Russian Federation, the Company continues to perform systematic geological surveying to replenish the region's resource base. In 2018, 68 linear kilometers of 2D seismic work was carried out, and 1 well was tested in the Russian oldest oil and gas producing region in the Republic of Dagestan. In order to search for prospective sites in the conditions of complex geology, deep depths, high density of infrastructure and agriculture, modern technologies of 2D seismic exploration and processing of field materials were applied. Based on the results of the work, the most promising structure was determined at the Zapadno-Izberbashsky license area, where drilling of the well was recommended.

The result of drilling Zapadno-Izberbashskaya well No.1 confirmed the possibilities of new discoveries in old oil and gas producing regions. Currently, the Company continues its exploration work in the Republic of Dagestan within the Karlanyurtovsky, Karatubinsky, Karabudakhentsky and Dimitrovskiy license areas; analysis of the undistributed fund of subsurface resources for the purpose of further licensing is underway.
